Tommaso Padoa-Schioppa, (23 July 1940 – 18 December 2010) was an Italian economist that held positions at the highest level in Italian and European institutions. He was Italian Minister of Economy and Finance (2006-2008), a member of the Executive Committee of the European Central Bank (1998-2005), President of Consob - National Commission for Companies and the Stock Exchange (1997-98), Deputy Director General of the Bank of Italy (1984-1997) and Director General of the Directorate for Economic and Financial Affairs at the European Commission (1979-1983)

He graduated from Bocconi University (Milan) in 1966 and obtained a Master Degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1970. He was Second Lieutenant of Artillery. He received six honorary degrees.
He was President of Notre Europe (Paris), Senior Fellow of the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI, Rome), President of the IASC (International Accounting Standards Committee) Foundation, Senior Adviser and Member of the Advisory Board of the Promontory Financial Group, LLC. He was Joint Secretary to the Delors Committee for the study of European economic and monetary union (1988-1989), Chairman of the Banking Advisory Committee of the European Commission (1988-1991), President of the Working Group on Payment Systems of the Central Banks of the European Community (1991-1995), President of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (1993-1997), President of the European Regional Committee of IOSCO (International Organization of Securities Commissions) (1997-1998), President of the FESCO (Forum of the European Securities Commissions) (1997-1998), President of the G10 Committee on Payments and Settlement Systems (2000-2005). He was a member of the “Group of Thirty” and of the Advisory Board of the Institute for International Economics (IIE, Washington). He was President of the International Center for Monetary and Banking Studies (Geneva, 2001-2006). He was Cavaliere di Gran Croce of the Italian Republic.
